Hydrogenbarrierebel\u00e6gninger forventes at g\u00f8re det muligt at anvende st\u00e5l, som er modtagelige for hydrogensk\u00f8rhed, is\u00e6r omkostningseffektive lavlegerede st\u00e5l eller letv\u00e6gtsst\u00e5l med h\u00f8j styrke, i en hydrogen\u00f8konomi. Det er prim\u00e6rt keramiske bel\u00e6gningsmaterialer, der er blevet unders\u00f8gt til dette form\u00e5l, herunder oxider, nitrider og karbider.
