Se espera que los revestimientos de barrera al hidr\u00f3geno permitan que los aceros susceptibles a la fragilizaci\u00f3n por hidr\u00f3geno, en concreto los aceros econ\u00f3micos de baja aleaci\u00f3n o los aceros ligeros de alta resistencia, puedan aplicarse en una econom\u00eda del hidr\u00f3geno. Para ello se han investigado principalmente materiales de revestimiento cer\u00e1micos, como \u00f3xidos, nitruros y carburos. En esta revisi\u00f3n, se analiza el estado de la t\u00e9cnica con respecto a la permeabilidad al hidr\u00f3geno para una variedad de recubrimientos. Al<sub>2<\/sub>O<sub>3<\/sub>TiAlN y TiC parecen ser los candidatos m\u00e1s prometedores de entre un amplio abanico de materiales cer\u00e1micos. Los m\u00e9todos de recubrimiento se comparan en cuanto a su capacidad para producir capas de calidad adecuada y su potencial de ampliaci\u00f3n para uso industrial. Adem\u00e1s de algunos metales puros espec\u00edficos, como el berilio y el wolframio, se han investigado sobre todo \u00f3xidos densos, nitruros y carburos. Las t\u00e9cnicas de recubrimiento para la preparaci\u00f3n de barreras bien adheridas y perfectas tienen evidentemente la misma importancia que la propia selecci\u00f3n del material. Las t\u00e9cnicas m\u00e1s atractivas son aquellas en las que se forma una ad-capa simplemente por oxidaci\u00f3n. Otros m\u00e9todos requieren entornos gaseosos espec\u00edficos con fuertes campos el\u00e9ctricos y magn\u00e9ticos, lo que puede suponer un l\u00edmite para la cobertura uniforme de las ad-capas en zonas grandes y desiguales. La evaluaci\u00f3n del rendimiento de la barrera conseguida es otra tarea dif\u00edcil. Varios m\u00e9todos nuevos, que pueden rastrear is\u00f3topos de hidr\u00f3geno a granel a concentraciones muy bajas, a menudo fallan en la determinaci\u00f3n de su movilidad.
