Andre metoder krever spesifikke gassmilj\u00f8er med sterke elektriske og magnetiske felt, noe som kan v\u00e6re en begrensning for ad-layerets jevne dekning over store og ujevne omr\u00e5der. En annen utfordrende oppgave er \u00e5 evaluere den oppn\u00e5dde barriereytelsen. Flere av de nye metodene som kan spore hydrogenisotoper i bulk ved sv\u00e6rt lave konsentrasjoner, klarer ofte ikke \u00e5 bestemme mobiliteten deres. De avdekker heller ikke betydningen av barrieredefekter. Den klassiske metoden med gassgjennomtrengningshastighet gjennom belagte membraner er fortsatt det mest p\u00e5litelige alternativet for \u00e5 bestemme den faktiske effektiviteten til hydrogenpermeasjonsbarrieren (HPB). Ved forh\u00f8yet temperatur registreres hydrogenpermeasjonshastigheten p\u00e5 nedstr\u00f8ms side av en belagt membran som utsettes for et betydelig h\u00f8yere hydrogenoppstr\u00f8mstrykk.
